AVAILABLE POSITION: Aquatic Science/Aquaculture Educator 

Location: Herring Gut Learning Center located in Port Clyde, ME   

JOB SUMMARY: Provides environmental education with an emphasis on Freshwater and MarineAquatic sciences. Audience K-12,  children and adults of all ages, and teachers. 


  • Establishes, plans and delivers programming throughout the year aligned to Next Generation Science Standards

  • Delivers activities to promote character development and team building skills in students

  • Uses experiential instructional designs that provide students the opportunity to observe, question, investigate and problem solve

  • Modifies delivery methods or materials to accommodate various student abilities and learning styles

  • Works with  students individually, and in groups, both at Herring Gut Learning Center (HGLC) and within school, home school, community setting, or virtually.

  • Uses technology as appropriate for preparation and student learning experiences

  • Provides an environment of positive behavioral supports for all students

  • Identifies, procures, stores, inventories and maintains classroom equipment materials in collaboration with HGLC staff

  • Participates in the operation and maintenance of salt and freshwater hatchery labs, the aquaponic greenhouse and salt water tanks and other exhibits that are developed in the future

  • Attends, collaborates and presents at professional meetings, conferences and teacher-training workshops to maintain and improve professional competence

  • Collaboratively prepares and provides professional learning events for educators and interested parties 

  • With entire HGLC staff, cultivates new audiences and potential partners for expanded programming

  • Nurtures existing collaborations with partnering organizations, school districts, and industry members by meeting regularly and participating in joint activities as appropriate

  • Plans and participates in events for the public through speaking engagements, visual presentations, field tours and facility tours both in person and virtually

  • Works collaboratively within a team model

  • Participates in HGLC activities and events that include evening and weekend hours and shares with system maintenance responsibilities throughout the year.

  • Other duties as assigned


Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum BS in biology, aquatic sciences, ecology, environmental science or closely related fields. Preferred Qualification:  A Masters Degree in a related field

  • Minimum of one year of successful school and public programming experience 

  • Experience with online and virtual programming platforms and methods

  • Experience with different pedagogical approaches to meet various learning styles

  • Knowledge of positive behavioral strategies for learning in all learning environments

  • Experiences with audiences of all ages

  • Experience in outdoor education and learning practices

  • Possess problem-solving, decision making and creative thinking abilities

  • Demonstrates a positive and enthusiastic attitude

  • Displays flexibility and ability to pivot in program developmentation and implementation. 

  • Demonstrates self-motivation, able to prioritize and self-initiate on daily basis

  • Ability to work effectively independently and within a team environment

  • Proficient with use of instructional and work environment technology equipment and software

  • Certified in Advanced First Aid/CPR or willing to obtain certification

  • Experience with virtual/remote teaching 

  • Knowledge of aquarium systems, aquaculture and aquaponics experience preferred but not required.  Willingness to learn is expected.

  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs, work in inside and outside environments and all weather conditions

  • This is a year round/12 months year position

   Benefits include sick, annual and personal leave days

  • Salary range is $38,000 to $42,000 dependent upon degree and experience
